Ad platforms are shifting from passive search ads to interactive, agentic shopping. ChatGPT Instant Checkout, powered by Stripe’s Agentic Commerce Protocol and integrated with Shopify, allows users to buy products directly inside ChatGPT conversations. Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), integrated into AI Mode and Gemini, lets shoppers buy directly within AI responses. Brands are moving from standard product feed management to optimizing product metadata specifically for AI commerce agents.

The shift from passive ads to agentic commerce

Traditional performance marketing relies on directing users to landing pages, product pages, or checkout experiences. The user must leave the platform they’re on, navigate an external site, find a product, and complete a purchase—a multi-step flow with abandonment risk at each stage.

Agentic commerce eliminates these friction points. Users stay within ChatGPT, Google Gemini, or another conversational AI interface. The AI agent recommends a product, displays pricing and options inline, facilitates payment, and completes the transaction without any external navigation. This native checkout dramatically increases conversion rates and reduces abandonment.

For brands, this represents both opportunity and disruption. Visibility now depends not on search rankings or ad placements, but on whether an AI agent includes your product in its recommendations and whether your product metadata allows frictionless purchase completion.

ChatGPT Instant Checkout and Stripe integration

OpenAI’s ChatGPT Instant Checkout, powered by Stripe, allows users to complete purchases natively within ChatGPT. Shopify merchants can now integrate their product catalogues with ChatGPT’s shopping features, making their inventory discoverable and immediately purchasable in conversation.

The flow is seamless: a user asks ChatGPT for a product recommendation, ChatGPT surfaces options from enrolled merchants, the user selects a product, Stripe processes payment using saved payment methods or new card entry, and the transaction completes in seconds. No redirect, no external website visit required.

For Shopify store owners, enrollment is straightforward. Stores export product feeds to ChatGPT through Shopify app integrations, maintaining real-time inventory and pricing data, and receive transaction reports showing sales attributed to ChatGPT referrals.

Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)

Google is not relying on third-party integration. Instead, it’s building native checkout directly into AI Mode and Gemini through the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). Merchants using Google Merchant Center and structured data (Product, Offer, and AggregateRating schema) can now enable inline checkout within AI responses.

When a user asks Gemini for a product recommendation, the response can include product images, reviews, pricing, and a “Buy now” button that opens Google Wallet-based checkout. Payment is processed through Google’s existing payment infrastructure, keeping the entire transaction within Google’s ecosystem.

This approach gives Google several advantages: first-party payment data, deeper user tracking, and direct control over the checkout experience. Merchants benefit from massive distribution (Gemini’s 200+ country reach) and simplified integration (existing Merchant Center feeds work automatically).

What product metadata optimization means

In traditional e-commerce, product metadata (title, description, images, specs) is optimized for search engines, human shoppers, and conversion. In agentic commerce, metadata must also be optimized for AI language models and agents that recommend, compare, and facilitate purchases.

AI systems look for: accurate, detailed descriptions that answer common questions, rich structured data (schema markup for pricing, availability, ratings, brand), high-quality images with clear alt text, verified customer reviews and ratings, clear pricing and shipping information, and inventory status that updates in real time.

Brands that invest in clean, structured product data will appear more frequently in AI recommendations. Brands with incomplete, outdated, or conflicting metadata will be deprioritized or excluded from AI commerce features entirely.

Implications for performance marketing teams

Product feed becomes the ad: Instead of managing ad creatives, copy, and landing pages, teams now focus on ensuring product feeds are complete, accurate, and discoverable by AI agents.

Structured data is critical: Schema markup—previously a technical SEO consideration—is now foundational for agentic commerce visibility. Incomplete schema means invisibility to AI commerce features.

Real-time inventory sync matters: If AI recommends a product that’s out of stock, the user abandons checkout. Inventory feeds must sync in near-real-time with AI platforms.

Reviews and ratings drive recommendations: AI systems weight verified customer reviews and ratings heavily when deciding whether to recommend a product. Encouraging authentic reviews becomes a performance marketing lever.

Direct platform relationships: Brands benefit from priority placement and higher visibility when they maintain direct relationships with OpenAI, Google, and other AI commerce platforms (through partnership programs or API integrations).

What brands should do now

Ensure product data completeness: audit product titles, descriptions, images, and specifications for accuracy and detail; implement or verify structured data markup (Product, Offer, AggregateRating schema); maintain real-time inventory sync with all channels (Merchant Center, Shopify, API); enroll products in eligible agentic commerce programs (ChatGPT Instant Checkout, Google UCP); encourage customers to leave authentic reviews on trusted platforms; monitor AI commerce reports separately from traditional search ads; and test how products appear in AI recommendations across platforms.
